tar:

gzip nomedoarquivo

tar.gz:

tar -vzxf nomedoarquivo

tar.bz2:

tar -vxjpf nomedoarquivo

Corrija o código! Para descompactar zip o comando é:

unzip nomedoarquivo e não gunzip nome do arquivo

Para descompactar .tar, pode-se usar o próprio tar:

tar -xvpf nomedoarquivo

Explicando:

x - extrai o conteúdo de um arquivo
v - mostra a extração de cada arquivo em modo texto
p - mantém as permissões de aquivo
f - usa um arquivo especificado

*Para mais informações e opções, digite: “tar –help” no terminal.

Parece mais complicado, mas acho mais simples pois assim você já se acostuma com o comando e as opções dele.
